Lab Introduction
The Wildlife Lab, led by Professor Hsiao-Wei Yuan, conducts research in various fields, including avian behavioral ecology, population dynamics, habitat management, biodiversity monitoring, impact risk assessment, and environmental education. The lab has extensive experience in field investigations and analysis, with nearly a hundred publications in journals.
This research lab collaborates with conservation teams from different countries to restore seabird habitats and has successfully increased the population of the globally endangered Chinese crested tern (Thalasseus bernsteini). For this achievement, they received a Special Achievement Award from the Pacific Seabird Group.Furthermore, the lab's research on the breeding behavior of the Blue-tailed bee-eater (Merops philippinus) has provided guidelines for establishing artificial breeding slopes in the national park. It has also created opportunities for tourism and education, allowing the public to appreciate avian ecology.
Currently, the Wildlife Lab is dedicated to seabird conservation in Taiwan, focusing on lesser-known species such as the Little tern (Sternula albifrons) for breeding habitat management, the Streaked shearwater (Calonectris leucomelas) for population ecology, and the Short-tailed albatross (Phoebastria albatrus) for population distribution.
