Lab Introduction
Our laboratory focuses on stem cell research and drug development. By integrating human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs), animal models, and computer-aided drug design (CADD), we aim to develop innovative therapeutic strategies for cancer and cardiovascular diseases. In recent years, we have been particularly interested in the roles of cannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors in different organ systems. We discovered that recreational marijuana activates cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) on vascular endothelial cells, leading to vascular inflammation and dysfunction. In contrast, the soy isoflavone genistein exhibits cardiovascular protective effects and shows limited penetration across the blood-brain barrier, making it a promising candidate for the development of next-generation peripherally restricted CB1 antagonists. We are currently advancing genistein derivatives with improved efficacy. On the other hand, while medical marijuana is clinically used to relieve chemotherapy-related side effects and improve appetite, its direct impact on tumors remains unclear. Our recent findings indicate that medical marijuana can stimulate colorectal cancer cells to secrete angiogenic factors, thereby promoting tumor angiogenesis and metastatic potential. Ongoing research in our laboratory continues to explore the critical roles of cannabinoid receptors within the tumor and tumor microenvironment.
